ADVANTAGES OF PERSONAL RESUME WEBSITE OVER TRADITIONAL RESUME

You're probably here because you don't know how to start your resume website and look for a few pointers. Well, look no further; this article is written specifically to help you make the best possible resume website.

First of all, what is a personal resume website?

A personal resume website, or your domain name, is a great way to market yourself. It's not only a place where you can put up all of your professional information for future employers, but it's also the best way to showcase who you are as an individual. Showcasing who you are is extremely important and helps build credibility with employers because they get to see what type of person they will be working with.

Well, think of it as an online version of your resume. It should contain your contact information, a summary of the skills you have, and any relevant accomplishments and maybe even some personal information like hobbies, sports, or interests related to your career goals.

Some people don't have personal resume websites because they think it is too expensive or takes too much time/effort to set up. We are here to tell you that it doesn't!

Advantages of Personal Resume Website over Traditional Resume

Many people today still send resumes as PDF files via email or ordinary letters. Some apply for jobs using LinkedIn profiles with no additional content or multimedia support whatsoever; some others publish candid videos via YouTube that give potential employers an idea of their personality, but these fail to showcase their full range of skills. The critical problem with these methods is that they're very impersonal: they communicate little about the applicant other than basic information such as contact details and educational background. They don't allow applicants to add extra relevant information regarding job history while offering virtually no room for creativity and personality.

A resume website has several advantages over traditional resumes:

  1. It provides a dynamic, interactive platform for showcasing your skills and experience to employers.
  2. It makes it easier for employers to contact you since they don't have to locate your email address or phone number; only a single click must get in touch with you.
  3. It allows you to create professional-looking, self-branding content without any technical skills whatsoever.
  4. You can add multimedia such as videos and presentations to showcase your skills & expertise better than what is possible on an ordinary resume PDF file.

5.First off, it works better than traditional resumes because you'll only have to make one site where you can include your entire job history instead of creating separate PDF files for every single job application; therefore, it will save you both time and money.

  1. It allows you to add a special section related to the intended position, which employers typically find very useful in narrowing down the applicant pool and deciding who should be invited for an interview or not. For example, if there's a particular skill required by the company but isn't listed on your resume/CV, they might still invite you to test your skills. This is where a resume website helps you to show that extra something in the best possible way.
  2. It allows you to add photos of yourself and/or videos showcasing your personality and skills, which are rarely included on traditional resumes, primarily if they're written by professional resume writers who don't know your true style or how to make yours stand out.
  3. A resume website is more convenient for employers because it's faster and easier for them to check whether you have any missing information than if they had to go through an ordinary PDF resume emailed to them; all they would need is a single click instead of opening up a new email message and manually navigating around until they find your contact details.

Disadvantages of Personal Resume Website

Okay, so now that's out of the way, let's move onto some disadvantages of personal resume websites. Firstly - there are none. Using one usually gives people the edge over others in an interview. Usually, your resume and cover letter are the first contacts with a potential employer, so if you want to stand out from the crowd, then a personal resume website can be a great way of doing it.

Stand out from the competition.

Some job seekers are surprised that they need their own personalised, branded online presence to succeed in today's competitive job market; however, when you learn more about how employers search, source and screen candidates, it makes sense why having an online resume website as part of your arsenal is crucial for success. Here's why...

An online personalised resume website can be your marketing platform to manage and market yourself online; therefore, it is the first impression that you are giving employers when they find you. Your website could also be the deciding factor in what sets apart your job search from other candidates and separates you from the pack.

Job search has become highly digitalised, with most employers using social media (like LinkedIn) to source talent. In contrast, many have implemented candidate relationship management (CRM) systems that enable them to quickly search for candidates based on specific criteria such as keywords, experience level, industry knowledge, etc. Therefore, if you are not taking advantage of these tools available today and leveraging them for your career needs-you could be potentially missing out on new opportunities.

You can connect with hiring managers more directly; you can set yourself apart from the competition; you can market your skills and experience to AS MANY EMPLOYERS as you would like…all while building in a cost-effective manner, which is essential for today's job seekers who are looking for jobs during tough economic times.

As a job seeker, you must understand two things: first, employers will not come to YOU (or at least Google) to search for "your" resume, but instead, they will look specifically based on the skills that they need or want to find in candidates-this is known as "TARGETED SEARCHING". Second, there are more ways than ever before for a company/employer to connect with talent. If you aren't leveraging these new resource opportunities, you could miss out on top prospects.

How to make a personal resume website?

Firstly, you need to decide whether you want to make it on your own or hire a website designer.

If you're not sure if you can do it yourself, don't worry, we've got just the guide for you. You can read about building your resume website here: how to build a resume website.

There are plenty of self-hosted WordPress themes and plugin options. You could quickly create a powerful professional looking resume website in minutes if you wanted to; however, they typically cost around $24-$99 each per year. You might think that the investment is worth it but let's compare them with Weebly, which is easy to use drag 'n' drop website builder that offers free hosting, domain name, and a paid premium version for more advanced users.

Create your personal resume website on Weebly

Now you have all your data ready for inputting into Weebly. Let's look at how easy it was to make this bordered one-page theme (the left sidebar with tabs doesn't show on mobile as it's not included by default unless you upgrade to pro):

Step 1 – Create your primary site

You can choose between hundreds of pre-made themes or start from scratch, building your theme from scratch. The latter is called the "blank" layout, and I used it for this example because it's simpler, takes less time to create than a standard multipage website with various page layouts. If you already have a WordPress site and would like to migrate it over to Weebly, there's also an import plug-in that will help you transfer all your content in just a few minutes (although some styling might need to be done manually).

Step 2 – Add your sections

The basic website structure consists of 3 main parts:

Your Home section: This loads when people visit the home page. It should contain links to your essential information such as resume/CV, portfolio, etc.

First Job (optional) Section: It can be used by job seekers to show their first working experience in a particular field. It's less common to see this type of section added, but it can be helpful for branding purposes to differentiate your personal brand from other similar candidates. Profile Section: This contains all the basic contact information such as name, address, email address and phone number(s). You may optionally include:

Secondary Contact Information Section(s): Secondary sections give you the flexibility to list any additional information that isn't related directly to yourself, such as social media profiles or links back to other sites with more detailed info on what you do; however, they're always optional, so if you don't need, you don't have to use them at all.

Social Media Links Section: Since you're using a Weebly site, it already includes a social media profile page for itself so if you want to add these links, do so by adding one widget per link. Adding them in the "Sections" section isn't necessary because visitors will only see that on mobile devices as it's not included by default unless you upgrade to pro.

Step 3 – Add your content

Now that your structure is done start filling out the sections with your resume, CV, and other optional information such as job descriptions or personal projects. Do this by entering text into the text boxes under each section. For example, use HTML tags to make content stand out. Since you're using a Weebly site, it already includes a social media profile page for itself so if you want to add these links, do so by adding one widget per link. Adding them in the "Sections" section isn't necessary because visitors will only see that on mobile devices as it's not included by default unless you upgrade to pro.

Products Section(s): You can use your own products section to show off any creative projects that you've made yourself, such as:

A book: Write down all the information about your book in this section using HTML tags and images (one image per chapter).

A song: Showcase and share your music or any other audio projects that you've created. Create a new section for each track on the album using HTML tags to indicate. Add images and playlists as desired.

However, if you decide that having someone else build your site is better suited for your needs, then we'd highly recommend contacting us. We'll be able to work with you directly and design exactly what you need!

Final Thoughts

The main reason employers look for online resumes is because they are faster and easier to search for. This means that your resume website will make you stand out from the crowd of average applicants.

Additionally, when a potential employer finds their ideal candidate on an online resume website, it allows them to connect with them directly; this instant connection can be precious in getting a new job opportunity.

With more than 80% of organisations using or planning to use social media in recruitment, now is the perfect time to leverage these digital tools to create a personalised branding profile that showcases your best qualities and enables employers to find YOU!

If you're searching for jobs, there is no reason not to create a personalised online resume that can showcase your skills and experiences, connect you directly with potential employers, and present you as a top candidate.

The biggest mistake that job seekers make is not taking advantage of the new technologies available today; therefore, if you are searching for jobs through traditional methods, then it's time to innovate your career search strategy by leveraging new online tools which will increase your chances of successfully finding your dream job.
