Art Culture in Frankfurt
The art culture in Frankfurt has been shaped over centuries by its position as one of Europe's most important trading centres. In addition to being home to some of Germany's best museums, the city boasts several excellent performing arts institutions. It was here that the first public theatre company was founded and where the famous Goetheanum temple complex now stands, which includes two theatres: the Theater is Kurfürstendamm, built in 1874; and the Deutsches Opernhaus.
Frankfurt's opera house hosts artist performances throughout the year, including regular seasons of operas performed in German. There are also frequent concerts held there. Other music events occur regularly at the Konzerthalle, which opened in 1991. This venue seats 1,900 people and is used primarily for classical chamber music recitals. Concerts by international orchestras, jazz ensembles, and rock groups often draw large audiences. Several smaller halls provide space for musical performance. A symphony orchestra frequently performs at the Städel Philharmonie.
In the visual arts, Frankfurt's Museum für Moderne Kunsthalle houses many world-class contemporary artists' works. Its permanent collection contains modern European painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, film, video, architecture, design, fashion, graphic, and installation art. Among those represented are Jean Arp, Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol, Gilbert & George, Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Richard Long, Louise Bourgeois, Jeff Wall, Olafur Eliasson, Marina Abramović, Ugo Rondinone, Carsten Höller, Wolfgang Tillmans, Thomas Demand, Tacita Dean, Hans Haacke, Jenny Holzer, Daniel Spoerri, and others.
Other major museums include the Alte Nationalgalerie, whose holdings include an ancient comprehensive selection of 17th-, 19th-, 20th-, 21st-, and 22nd-century European painting, sculpture, prints, photographs, decorative objects, and graphics; and the Gemäldegalerie der Universität Zu Berlin, which holds an extensive collection of medieval religious art.
In 2008, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper ranked Frankfurt among the top five cities worldwide "with the highest number of cultural attractions."
Different Types of English Art Jobs in Frankfurt
Art Teacher's aide - A teacher's aid helps teach ESL/foreign language classes by answering questions, keeping records, preparing lesson plans, grading assignments, and participating in class discussions. Teacher's aides also help prepare lessons and answer student inquiries. They can work full time or part-time and usually earn $10-$15 per hour after training. Hourly rates vary depending upon location, experience level, and qualifications required.
Art Translator / Interpreter - Translators translate written material into different languages while interpreters interpret spoken communication between two people who do not understand each other's native tongue. Most translators and interpreters work independently without supervision. However, they often need special skills like medical terminology, legal terms, technical jargon, financial concepts, scientific information, religious references, military vocabulary, political phrases, etc., which must be learned before beginning their job search.
These professionals typically earn less than those listed above because they have no formal education in translation or interpreting. But, once trained, many find that they enjoy this type of work very much. Some employers prefer candidates with degrees in translation or interpretation over others who possess relevant professional certification. In addition, most companies require applicants to pass criminal background checks before hiring them.
Art Tutor - Private tutors teach subjects ranging from reading comprehension and math to music theory and computer programming. Students pay tuition fees directly to private tutor agencies or directly to individual tutors. Costs depend on the subject matter; age group served, length of service, geographical area, availability of services, and hours worked. Teachers generally receive compensation based on an hourly rate, plus benefits. Private tutors may be eligible for unemployment insurance coverage depending on state regulations when providing instruction outside school settings.
Library assistant in an Art Institute- Librarians use assistants to perform clerical duties, assist patrons, maintain files, and take care of administrative tasks. These include cataloguing library collections, processing requests for new acquisitions, filing reference materials, processing overdue fines, and assisting librarian staff members. Assistants are responsible for checking items off a patron's account at checkout. Many libraries offer flexible scheduling options so workers can choose how long to stay during shifts. When working with computers, library assistants learn basic software programs and troubleshoot problems.
Art Assistant in a Gallery - Galleries employ art assistants to help curate exhibitions, research artwork available for purchase, prepare exhibits for openings, set up displays, hang paintings, arrange furniture, answer phones, handle mail, run errands, clean galleries, and more. Artists hire gallery assistants as needed. Salaries range from minimum wage to slightly higher than minimum wage. The average salary is about $12/hr.
Customer Service Representative for Museums- Customer service reps field incoming calls and emails from customers seeking assistance regarding products sold by product manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, distributors, or third-party sellers. Rep also handles complaints and helps resolve issues related to billing disputes, returns, exchanges, warranty claims, lost shipments, order cancellations, shipping errors, damaged goods, missing merchandise, price changes, store credit offers, promotions, rebates, coupons, gift cards, refunds, and tax payments.
Sales Associate for Art Galleries - Sales associates sell fine arts and antiques through retail outlets such as department stores, speciality shops, online websites, flea markets, auctions, fairs, and other venues. They must have knowledge of current trends in the market and the ability to communicate effectively with clients. Associates typically work part-time, but full‐time schedules are not uncommon. Most sales associates earn between $10-$30 per hour, depending upon location and experience.
Final Thoughts
Frankfurt is a fantastic place if you are an artist because it has many museums that allow you to exhibit your works. It's one of the most popular places in Germany for tourists who want to visit some fantastic cities like Munich and Dusseldorf. I would recommend this city to anyone looking for good shopping, dining, sightseeing and work opportunities!
