9 POINTS TO KEEP IN MIND TO PASS A PRE-EMPLOYMENT PERSONALITY TEST

The best way to get your personality traits measured is through a well known and established test like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) or the 16PF Questionnaire. This type of test will have been developed by professionals and taken by many people before you, who agree that it delivers accurate results. Personality tests are not always easy to pass if you are inexperienced at handling them.

Here are a few tips helping you do just that!

  1. First things first, make sure you have some time to prepare for it. You don't want to suddenly receive the test as a gift on your birthday from your friends and family (or worse – during an interview with a potential employer!). It would help if you took the time to study what the test is all about, what it looks like, and how to answer questions as truthfully as possible without lying.
  2. A common problem for people taking personality tests is answering too quickly when they don't know the answer. You need to be honest with yourself and others, which means not answering questions just because you don't know the answer. Take your time to think about what they are asking (you will usually have five seconds or so) and only then give an answer you feel is right for you.
  3. Think carefully about why they would ask this question. For example, if it says something like 'which of these fruits would you enjoy eating the most' – think about whether it's a true or false question. If you do like bananas, then choose true; if not, then select false.
  4. Give yourself plenty of time to answer questions by jotting down notes and thoughts as you go along with scrap paper and pencils.
  5. Avoid giving away your innermost secrets. If it asks you 'what is the deepest, darkest secret you hold about yourself' don't answer this, or try to avoid answering it as much as possible. Answer with things that are true for most people like "I occasionally have been late paying my bills", but not something that could be used against you, likes "I have lied about my age on more than one occasion".
  6. Think about the question, but don't necessarily answer straight away. For example, if you are asked 'would you rather be feared or loved' – think about it for a moment before answering. Fear is not the best choice to aim for in life, and by taking your time to mull over the question, you can give yourself time to come up with an honest but yet well thought out answer.
  7. Keep track of how long each section takes you so that at the end of the test, you can see which topics gave you trouble and need improvement. For example, if it took longer than five minutes for any topic, chances are this was a problem.
  8. Try to use your answers from previous tests (if you have taken this test before). This way, you will know what kind of answers are generally used by the type of person that fits in with your personality, and focus on emulating these. Be warned, however, as humans often change their personalities over time – so don't be too surprised if something substantially differs even if it's not that big a difference!
  9. Look for free practice tests online. You can find interactive practice tests by going online and simply typing in 'MBTI Test' into Google or another search engine. There are also plenty of books available that provide you with both personality test results and instructions on passing them.
