Hague is a city in the province of Friesland, Netherlands. It has an area of 13 km² and had a population of 77,908+ in 2016. Hague is popular for its international airport Schiphol Airport which serves as one of Europe's busiest airports. The city was founded by William I on July 1st 1246 AD, at the site where he landed from his ship after crossing the Zuiderzee. In 1415 it became part of Holland when Prince John III married Princess Isabella of Portugal, who ruled over Flanders. On May 10th 1813, during Napoleon's invasion of France, the Dutch army defeated French forces under Jean Moreau at Waterloo. After this victory, the country gained independence and formed into three provinces: North-West, South West and East. Today, Hague is home to many embassies, including Russia, China, Germany, India, Japan, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Vatican City State, Austria, Belgium and Canada.
The name "Hague" comes from the Old English word hagia meaning holy place or church. This refers to the first settlement established near the old St. Marys Church, which stood until 1559. Over time the town grew up around the main square called 'De Waal' with other squares such as 'Binnenweg', 'Grote Markt' and 'Kerkstraat'. Many buildings were built between 1750 - 1850, but most are now protected monuments like the Town Hall and the Royal Palace.
